I would be a young boy when I first heard about Mac and Gloria. Her father in law Hugh, ( named after his father) had come over from NJ to Scotland because he was dying, and wanted to die in the land of his birth. Sadly he was the first of a long line of cancer death's in the Scottish McKillops. My mother, Elizabeth, was one of his brothers. Many years later Gloria and Mac came over to Coatbridge in Scotland to meet all the family there. She struck us as a very gregarious, glamorous lady who proudly told us the story of her Roller Derby Queen.
We then lost touch until my sister Moira, her husband Bill Young and her then 2 children emigrated to Canada and when my wife, Deirdre and I and our 7 month old baby visited them in London, Ontario, Mac, Gloria and all their children drove up from Tom's River NJ to meet us. That seemed so extreme to us and yet so normal to them. Family was important to her.
We met up periodically when Moira and Bill and their then by now 4 boys, moved to Scotch Plains NJ and later to New Hope PA and the New Jersey McKillop families always came to family events like weddings of Moira's children and Bill's funeral.
