Obituary of John Boekell

It is with great sadness that the family of John Walter Boekell announce his passing on April 24, 2018, at the age of 68 years.


Born at Holy Name Hospital in Teaneck, NJ, John grew up in Dumont, NJ. He attended St. Mary’s College in Lebanon, Kentucky and went on to be part of the Brotherhood at Resurrection College in Waterloo, Ontario.


John spent over 40 years in banking, beginning his career in Ocean County at the First National Bank of Toms River in Barnegat, NJ. He went on to manage several banks in Manahawkin, NJ. In 2008, he opened the Shore Community Bank in Manahawkin as Assistant Vice President / Bank Manager and spent the last 10 years with a loving banking family.


Throughout his life John served on numerous boards and committees. His heart was with St. Mary’s Parish where he was a Eucharistic Minister and will be remembered for his work on the Nights of Summer Carnival and on the School Board for All Saints Regional Catholic School. A member of the Southern Ocean Rotary Club, he was both a Rotarian of the Year and Paul Harris Fellow. He worked with the Southern Ocean County Chamber of Commerce, Knights of Columbus, Salvation Army, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and other charitable organizations.


He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Johanna (Maines), daughter Theresa (Michael Foster), and his only grandchild, Jace whom he loved and adored. He will be fondly remembered by many beloved family and friends for his kind spirit and generous nature.


A Celebration of John’s Life will be held on Saturday, May 19 at St. Mary’s of the Pines, 100 Bishop Way, Manahawkin, NJ 08050. At 10:00 am there will be a Gathering directly followed by an 11:00 am Mass with Msgr. Ken Tuzeneu officiating. From 12:00 – 3:00 pm all are welcome to join the family for refreshments at St. Mary’s Parish Center directly behind the church.
