Dear Mom
We miss you! There were so many times this week I thought to call you on my ride home from work--our normal tradition. You were always glad to hear from us and typically waited for us to call. I could never figure that out...but you said you simply didn't know when it was a good time to call. Any time was always my response.
We all know your life was not easy. We all know some of the choices you made didn't make your life easy. But through it all you maintained a wicked and at times an inappropriate sense of humor--which despite all of our denials we all inherited and use today. We also know you had an undying passion for reading. Just ask the Double Day book club! I think it was your escape from the realities of four young children, an absent husband and a live-in grandpa. Oh yeah, inside a 750 square foot ranch house with three bedrooms and one bathroom for seven of us. I still don't know how or why you did it.
For all of the years I can remember you were doing laundry or waiting for Dad to come home. There were many bright spots at least a few times a year, 4th of July, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's. You always made sure there were equal gifts under the tree and scrimped and saved to be fair to all of us. We always had one big gift--ukelele, typewriter, trains, pinky ring;-0). I can recall the year (circa 1975) when you were obsessed with S&H green stamps--our best year ever! I got Toss a Cross--the bean bag game.
Trisha reminds me everyday how blessed we all were given that despite any differences or arguments, you always welcomed us home with love and forgiveness. I married a strong, independent woman largely because of you making me strong enough as a man to appreciate and respect that.
It is smattered throughout my childhood. As a young boy in Parkway Pines it wasn't easy being the artistic kid who loved school, owned a chalk board, loved nature and had more girls who were friends than boys. But you nurtured my love of nature and the arts. Remember when I was the King of Candy Land in third grade? What an awesome play. You came and watched with pride. When I came home from school that day there was a gift for me to recognize my performance. It was a small file box with 3X5 cards ad dividers and a carbon ordering pad--geeky things I loved and you knew it!
I remember my 5th grade birthday the you took me to Seven Eleven to get my street hockey stick and a copy of Hot Rod magazine! You see it wasn't the size of the gift--you just got me! Who can forget the artistic streak and the many trips to the art store in Point Pleasant. Or then there was the house plants, so many house plants. Man could I grow some foliage. I most enjoyed when I was in 7th grade and we would go food shopping in the morning before I went to school with Mrs. Pearson. We were on split sessions. You always got me red hots to take to class that afternoon.
My favorite memory of you was your time at Zaksons. You started as an affiliate working the floor and they saw in you what you didn't see--you were awesome. People loved you! You became the department Manager and eventually became the store manager in Toms River. I used to ride my moped after work at Jakes to come see you at work--I was proud! I remember shopping for new clothes for you at Bradleys the day before you began working--you looked incredible. You, Syl, and Val had been walking and following Lean Line (the 70s version of Weight Watchers;-0). This was your moment. A moment you always had in you and you deserved.
I could do this all day, but I simply wanted to say thank you and I love you--we love you! Yup, Trisha is your daughter too! We will see each other again so be ready for some Thumper, 99 and quarters and even a game of pinnochle.
We are grateful for our lives and acknowledge you part in making that happen--love ya.
Thanks Mom, rest in peace until we meet again and be sure to smack Dad for us (in a loving way).
Finally, be sure to hug everyone, we miss them terribly--Adelaide, Uncle Gordon&Aunt Jo, Aunt Lorraine, Aunt Carol, and of course Grandpa and Daddy!

Man, that is going to be one hell of a pinnochle game! I wonder if Adelaide will fold when Dad shows a double pinnochle;-0)
